'The technology used by the modern warfighter was unimaginable 100 years ago, when a team gathered at the intersection of science, industry, government and defense, and grew to become NDIA. Here’s our story: The “Great War” has just concluded. While America helped lead the Allies to victory, Brigadier General Benedict Crowell believes the United States military arsenal was woefully ill-prepared. Recognizing that warfare had recently undergone a “tremendous evolution,” where “soldiers have become machine operatives,” he convenes a meeting of like-minded military officers and manufacturers. Together, they establish the Army Ordnance Association to promote America’s industrial readiness in both peacetime and war. As the world descends into conflict again, victory seems impossible. This time, America’s “arsenal of democracy” is prepared to answer the call. By 1944, the tide is turning, and the U.S. military experiences a rebirth fueled by the rise in industrial productivity. The Navy Industrial Association is founded to expand the work of the AOA. These associations push technological innovation and industrial development, from the Cold War to Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. In 1997, partner organizations merge to form the National Defense Industrial Association. One hundred years after our founding, warfighters rely on machines and advanced technology. For the next one hundred years, NDIA’s steadfast commitment to our warfighters will continue to keep us at the heart of the mission.
