'Valerie Steele Receives National Arts Club Medal of Honor'

'The National Arts Club recognized Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of @MuseumatFIT, with the Medal of Honor for her outstanding achievements in fashion on April 22, 2022. The author of many books and exhibition catalogues, Steele is the first fashion historian to receive the award.Since 1997, Steele has curated or co-curated more than 25 exhibitions, including “The Corset: Fashioning the Body;” “Gothic: Dark Glamour;” “Ralph Rucci: The Art of Weightlessness;” “Daphne Guinness;” “A Queer History of Fashion;” “Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color;” and “Paris, Capital of Fashion.”Steele, who holds a Ph.D. in cultural history from Yale University, is author or co-author of more than two dozen books.As author, curator, editor, and public intellectual, Steele has been instrumental in creating the modern field of fashion studies and in raising awareness of the cultural significance of fashion. She is regularly quoted in media outlets around the globe. Steele has been described by \"The Washington Post\" as “one of fashion’s brainiest women,” and by Suzy Menkes as “the Freud of Fashion.”The National Arts Club Medal of Honor is awarded to exemplary leaders in their respective fields.
