'(3 May 2017) LAGERFELD BRINGS ANCIENT GREECE TO PARIS FOR THE LATEST CHANEL CRUISE SHOW After traveling the world with its annual cruise collections, Chanel came home to Paris to stage its 2017/18 show Wednesday (3 May 2016), probably the last cruise collection to be designed by Karl Lagerfeld before his retirement. The designer looked to ancient Greece as his inspiration, transforming a space in the Grand Palais with massive stone walls, crumbling marble columns, pebbles on the ground, and an olive tree. This was also a nod to Gabrielle Chanel, who had a marble Venus (the goddess of beauty) in her apartment on the Rue Cambon. Lagerfeld found modernity in the Antique. The house\'s iconic tweeds were used in a variety of shapes from short belted dresses to patterned columns, some with fringe at the hems. On their feet, the models wore high-heeled gladiator sandals criss-crossing up to the knee, in bright shades of turquoise, orange, and canary yellow. There were large, floaty pants and pantsuits in fabrics from pleated silk to denim, bathing suits with long transparent coverups, and toga-inspired silk robes, some cut asymmetrically off one shoulder, others with classic Antique patterns. Colors ranged from black and bronze to rust, dusty rose, cream and metallics, as timeless as the stones in the decor. Metallic evening wear came embroidered with jewels, and a series of long white silk transparent robes had thick patterned sequined bands emphasizing the waist. As for accessories, there was much for Chanelistas to choose from: layers of necklaces, cuffs at the wrists, bracelets snaking around biceps, half-gloves with the double-C logo, gilded headdresses, handbags ranging from clutches to leather duffels, oversized sunglasses with sculpted frames and a good dose of attitude. Lagerfeld\'s young godson, Hudson Kroenig, walked the runway, as he often does, and came out for the finale holding the designer\'s hand.
