Lauren Bacall’s Style (Her Go-To Look) • Lauren Bacall’s go-to outfit is an A-line skirt and button up shirt (her equivalent of reaching for a lululemon). An A-line skirt is fitted at the hips and flares out to the hem, and is in the shape of an A. • The first time we see Lauren Bacall wearing this outfit is in the scene where she picks up and hides Humphrey Bogart in her car, as he has just escaped prison in San Quentin and is on the run from the law, and Bacall happened to be painting in the hills nearby. • Lauren Bacall’s outfit in this scene is a checkered blouse (button-up and fitted) and a light colored A-Line skirt, which is paired with cute black loafers, thus turning her classic retro outfit in an everyday practical outfit. Lauren Bacall’s Date Night Outfit • After Lauren Bacall has picked up Bogart (on the run from the prison of San Quentin), the next scene is their first ‘date night’ – enjoying a candlelit dinner at Lauren Bacall’s loft in San Francisco. • Lauren Bacall is wearing an elegant loosely fitting black blouse (possibly velvet material), which is a dressier version of her daily button-up blouses. Typically her elegant evening outfits or gowns have shoulder pads to dress it up a notch and add that dramatic evening flair. The blouse’s accent piece is a gold pendent and it is paired with a classic A-line skirt that falls mid-calf. • Throughout Dark Passage, Lauren Bacall uses small artistic and elegant accent pieces (such as pendants, statement rings, etc.) to elevate her outfits from daytime to evening. Lauren Bacall’s “Rescue Duty” Outfit • Lauren Bacall does a lot of rescuing of Humphrey Bogart in this movie. This scene showcases the perfect classic outfit to help a man—in need of rescuing. • Lauren’s “Rescue Duty Outfit” appears to be a long housecoat that makes her look “put together” when lounging around the house. It would be equivalent to a classy lounging evening robe today, as Lauren Bacall wears this in the evenings and first thing in the mornings. This robe is long and fitted, roughly ankle length, in a checkered plaid pattern, fastened at the neck with two large buttons. Lauren Bacall’s “Room Service” Outfit • The next morning Lauren Bacall brings Bogie breakfast in bed. • In this scene, she is wearing a very elegant button-up silky white top, which is paired again with A-line skirts and black slingback pumps (because, of course, when you make breakfast in the morning for your man—you always dress to the nines and wear your pumps!) Lauren Bacall’s “Nurse Duty” Outfit (AKA Repurposed Rescue Outfit) • Next we move into the scene that is the big reveal of Dark Passage where, Lauren Bacall is going to remove Bogart’s bandages and the audience will see his face for the first time • For the momentous occasion, Lauren Bacall again wears her long checkered lounge coat / robe. • Yes, for those of you paying attention, it is the same classic one she wore earlier for rescue duty! Classic Trench coat Everyday Uses • Bogart layers his trench coat on top of his full pajama set, before Bacall removes his bandages. Ultimate Date Night (South America Rendezvous) • Lauren Bacall arrives in South America and drives to their designated rendezvous spot, she walks in…a showcase of elegance—with a perfectly matched blouse and skirt (or dress), paired with a long dark coat. Honorable Mention: Men’s Fashion: 1940’s Men’s Leather Jackets • When Bogart is escaping from San Quentin, the leather jackets worn by cops are classic, resulting in very fashionable cops who look smart and put together. • Also, the cabbie is wearing a classic 1940’s leather jacket. His leather jacket is paired with a white button-up shirt, tie, and cabbie hat, which tops off his uniform. Wouldn’t you love your Uber driver to be so smartly dressed? Have you seen Dark Passage?
