'(30 Sep 2016) BOLD FEMINISM AT DIOR Friday\'s (30 SEPT. 2016) Dior show celebrated the arrival of of the label\'s first woman to hold the creative reins at the fashion house in its 60 years of history: Maria Grazia Chiuri. Held at the garden of Musée Rodin, with American recording artista Rihanna, American model Karlie Kloss and former First Lady of France Carla Bruni among the A-list celebrities in attendance, ,the show unveiled the French house\'s spring summer 2017 collection, which embodied a bold feminine and feminist outlook. \"Feminist is a recurring word for her,\" the show notes said. \"Maria Grazia Chiuri takes on the tradition of the house of Dior, placing the woman first and center.\" There were glimmering tulle gowns, tailored suiting and quilted leather jackets. Silhouettes were contemporary and agile. The collection\'s pièces de résistance, however; were white cotton T-shirt emblazoned with expressions of female empowerment. One in particular, worn with a midnight blue tulle skirt, featured the phrase \"We should all be feminists,\" paying hommage to Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the show\'s guest of honor, and whose 2013 TEDx talk on feminism has been viewed more tan 3 million views on YouTube. A fragment of this powerful speech was featured in Beyoncé\'s anthem \"Flawless,\" which fittingly played in the background during the show. \"I strive to be attentive and open to the world and to create fashion that resembles the women of today,\" Chiuri said in the fashion notes. \"Fashion that corresponds to their changing needs, freed from the stereotypical categories of \"masculine/feminine,\" \"Young/not so Young,\" \"reason/emotion,\" which nonetheless also happen to be complementary aspects. Fencing was another dominant theme in the collection, which featured several variations of the fencing jacket in pristine white cotton. Chiuri found a common thread between this sport and feminism. \"The uniform of the female fencer is, with the exception of some special protections, the same as for a male fencer,\" Chiuri pointed out in the show\'s notes. \"The female body adapts itself to an outfit which, in turn, seems to have been shaped to its curves.\" The bold image of a beating heart in crimson red, appeared embroidered in several of the collection\'s pieces, on a fencing jacket, on a bustier worn with a white floor-length tulle skirt, and on the hem of a beige, crystal-encrusted, embroidered skirt. Dresses with tarot-like images were also a part of the collection. Sumptuous sign embroideries over delicate fabric created a painting-like look, inspired by the the phrase \"Learn to follow your dreams\" as expressed in the show\'s introduction. At the end of the show, Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talked about her impressions of the show: \"I loved it, I thought it was a very confident collection.\" You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/6be0fd77266887c16b9e1757a9ad2a09 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork'
